Water Isn't Enough: The Summer Electrolyte Fix Most People Skip

You can drink water all day and still be dehydrated. Because the problem in summer isn't just water loss — it's sodium loss. Here's the paradox, the four symptoms most people misread, and the exact three-step protocol we use with our Edmonton clients to fix it.

Every summer I have the same conversation with clients half a dozen times a week. The client is exhausted by three in the afternoon. Cramping at night. Foggy through the morning. Their water bottle has been full and refilled all day. They're doing everything right — and yet they feel like garbage.

Nine times out of ten, the issue isn't training load or sleep or diet. It's the assumption that when you feel "dehydrated" in the summer, the answer is more water. In the training population — anyone who sweats regularly — this is exactly wrong. You can drink water all day and end the day more dehydrated than you started, because the real problem is not that you're losing water. It's that you're losing water and sodium, and replacing only one of them.

Here is what's actually happening physiologically, why the symptoms look the way they do, and the three-step protocol we run with clients that fixes it inside of a week.

The Sweat-Sodium Math (This Part Is Non-Negotiable)

Human sweat is not just water. It's a saline solution — the average person loses roughly 1,000 milligrams of sodium per litre of sweat, though this varies from about 500 mg on the low end to over 2,000 mg for a "salty sweater." (You know if you're one — the white streaks on the shirt and the taste of salt on your lip after training are the tell.)

Now consider a normal summer day. You go for a walk in the morning. You train. You sit in the sun for a while. You lose two litres of sweat over the course of the day — a modest estimate. That's 2,000 milligrams of sodium out, easily.

Now you drink your recommended two to three litres of water. What have you replaced? Water, yes. Sodium, no. In fact, by drinking that much plain water without replacing the sodium, you've diluted the sodium concentration in your bloodstream even further. Your blood is now hypotonic — too dilute. And your body, sensing the imbalance, will start pulling water out of your bloodstream and dumping it into your tissues (edema) or trying to excrete more of it (frequent urination that doesn't relieve thirst).

The result: you feel exhausted, foggy, headachy, crampy, and thirsty in a way that no amount of water can fix. Because water isn't the fix. Sodium is.

The Four Signs You're Under-Salted (And Almost Certainly Blaming Something Else)

These are the four symptoms clients report most often — and the four that almost always vanish within a week of fixing sodium intake:

Afternoon fog

Brain feels underwater by 2 p.m., not responsive to more water or more coffee. Often mistaken for poor sleep or blood sugar.

Standing lightheadedness

Head rush when you stand up too quickly. Classic sign that blood pressure is dropping because plasma volume is low.

Cramping

Mid-workout or overnight in the calves and feet. Often blamed on "muscle fatigue" — usually electrolyte-driven.

Thirst that water doesn't fix

You drink, and 20 minutes later you're thirsty again. That's your body asking for sodium, not water.

Any one of these on its own can have other causes. Any two of them together in a hot week, and I'd bet money you're under-salted before I looked at anything else.

The Three-Step Summer Protocol

Fix your electrolytes in three windows

  1. Morning — a pinch of real salt in your first glass of water. About 1/4 teaspoon of unrefined sea salt (Redmond Real Salt, Celtic sea salt, Himalayan pink — all work) dissolved in 500 mL of water. This is the single most powerful drink of your day. You woke up already down on sodium from overnight losses; this restores baseline before the day starts pulling from you.
  2. Around training — an electrolyte packet 15 to 20 minutes before you start. LMNT is the current gold standard (1,000 mg sodium per packet); Body Bio, Redmond Re-Lyte, and DIY blends with sodium/potassium/magnesium all work. Take it before the workout, not just after — you want the electrolytes on board before the sweat starts.
  3. Whole day — target 2 to 4 grams of sodium total. Higher end if you sweat heavily or train twice a day. This is roughly double what a low-sodium diet delivers. Track it for a week if you're unsure — most people are shocked how low they are.

Total added daily time: about 90 seconds. Cost: under $2 per day. Payoff: no more afternoon crashes, no more cramps, no more foggy summer weeks blamed on the heat itself.

"But Isn't Sodium Bad For You?"

This is the question I get every time I make this recommendation. And it's a fair question — for decades, the entire wellness culture told us salt was the enemy. What most people don't realize is that the sodium restriction guidance has been substantially revised for the healthy, active adult population in the last twenty years of research.

The original blanket "eat less salt" messaging came from studies primarily focused on sedentary populations with hypertension. When you look at studies of healthy, active adults, the relationship between sodium and cardiovascular risk turns out to be J-shaped, not linear — meaning both very low sodium and very high sodium associate with worse outcomes, but the sweet spot for a training population sits significantly higher than the general public health guidelines suggest.

What Not To Do

A few common summer hydration mistakes worth naming:

Chugging plain water when you feel thirsty

If your thirst is driven by electrolyte imbalance (as it usually is in the heat), chugging a litre of plain water will make it worse for the next hour, not better. Sip electrolyte water instead. Or take a pinch of salt on your tongue and follow with water.

Relying on sports drinks

Most conventional sports drinks are engineered around sugar and colouring, with sodium as an afterthought — often only 100 to 200 mg per bottle when you need closer to 1,000. Read the label. If sodium is under 500 mg per serving and sugar is over 20 grams, it's not doing what you think it's doing.

Only supplementing after a workout

Post-workout is fine, but pre-workout is better. The electrolytes on board while you train reduce cramping, sustain contraction quality, and protect against the "flat" feeling that hits mid-session in the heat.

Assuming your dietary sodium is enough

It might be. But most home-cooked, whole-food-based diets in the "wellness" segment actually run low on sodium — because most of the sodium in the general population's diet comes from processed and restaurant food, and people who cook clean at home often unknowingly under-salt. Test it: track sodium for three days and see where you land.

My Two Cents

Every summer at the studio I see the same pattern. Clients who were feeling great in the spring hit July and start telling me their energy is off, their workouts are flat, they can't sleep as well, they're cramping at night. In more than half of those conversations, the fix is not more sleep or a training deload or a new supplement — it's fixing what they're drinking.

Try the morning pinch of salt for a week. That alone will convince most people that this isn't a fringe biohack — it's fundamental physiology. And if you're one of the clients I've seen the sunset in your face this month, walking out of a workout looking like you're still catching up on air two hours later, this is the first thing I'd change.
